Are You Building in Vain?

Psalm 127:1
Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it.

We cook wholesome meals for our family, try our best to maintain a clean and orderly home, manage the finances trying to make the most of the little amount of money we have, nurture and love our husband and children. We mothers work hard! But do you realize that all our hard labor can actually be in vain? The word vain means the following:

ineffectual or unsuccessful; futile: a vain effort.
without real significance, value, or importance; baseless or worthless: vain pageantry; vain display.
senseless or foolish.

We all want our work to count. How terrible that all our efforts can be considered worthless.

1 Samuel 16:7 (NKJV)
But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

You may be wondering how this verse relates to this topic, but it shows that we can’t always judge by the exterior.
Our flesh looks at the outside appearance, God sees the heart. We like to work hard and see our efforts, such as a clean house after hours of cleaning and organizing. We can often fool ourselves into thinking we are building Godly homes because of the external, but we can’t only judge by the external. We might teach our kids to quote The Lord’s Prayer and Psalm 23, but fail to ever teach them to pray. We may teach our children to follow and obey all the rules and commandments, but fail to teach them to fear the Lord and to love the Lord their God with all their hearts.
When building a Godly home, God isn’t looking for perfection. Your home will never be perfect here on earth. Our homes are to built all for the glory of God.

Are we trying on our own to build our home?
God’s Word says “…apart from Me you can do nothing.” John 15:5
When we try to do our work in our own strength and only come to God when we are worn out and frazzled, we are building our homes in vain. Each morning we need ask God to help us walk according to His Spirit and not our flesh. We need to humble ourselves before God and ask for His strength and His love to make it through the day. This is something I failed at for years and still struggle with. When you begin your day casting ALL your cares upon Him Who loves and cares for you, you will feel such a burden lifted and a peace that nothing can replace. God isn’t impressed with your hard work and all your vain efforts to raise a Godly heritage because the truth is, we CAN'T do this without Him! God has shown me that He wants our hearts before He wants our service.
He wants to be our strength, our hope, our joy, our Rock! He wants to be the Builder of our homes!
Lord, give us homes built firmly upon You. Help our work to not be in vain. Let our work be You working in us and through us to accomplish Your purpose and to glorify Your name alone. Amen
