Family Reading Time

Reading together as a family not only helps your children become superior readers, but is a great way to spend time together as a family.  It's easy to fit in daily reading as a family and you will find it worth the effort.  You can set aside a short amount of time at the family dinner table or as soon as dinner is finished.  Another great time to read is 30 minutes before bedtime.  Once your family gets in the habit of reading together you will find that it's something that you and your children will actually look forward to. Here is a list of books that would be great for family reading time:

The Bible-  Our family tries to read a Proverb for each day. There are 31 Proverbs and generally 31 days of each month.  If it is the 5th day of the month, read the 5th Proverb.  Discuss the scripture and ask your children questions such as: What do you think the scripture means? How can we as an individual apply it to our life? Is there any warnings that God wants us to take notice of? What does this verse encourage us to do?

10 Peas in a Pod-  Our family is starting the book 10 Peas in a Pod this week!  This is a true story of the Arnold Pent family. They traveled all across North America, often wondering where they would sleep or where their next meal would come from or how they would pay for gas. But they trusted God for His provision.  This book was endorsed by Vision Forum, whom I highly respect. I'll let you know how we like it when we complete the book!

Pilgrim's Progress -by John Bunyan

Trial and Triumph- Stories from Church History is  forty-six brief biographies for children, Hannula sketches the stirring trials and triumphs of many famous and some lesser known figures in our family of faith--including Augustine, Charlemagne, Anselm, Luther, Bunyan, and C.S. Lewis. Through them we can begin to enjoy the old paths and find rest for our souls.

  1. We have really enjoyed "A Hive of Busy Bees" and "Another Hive of Busy Bees" which are great short stories for young readers, and teach valuable character lessons at the same time! They are put out by SureFoundation.com.
