When Christians Watch Secular Movies

  As christians how do we know which movies we should watch and whether or not it's o.k. to watch the occassional secular movie? Are we as christians even concerned about what we watch? If we seek to please the Lord, we should be.

Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
1 Corinthians 10:31

If the movie you are watching doesn't bring glory to God, don't watch it.

I am saddened how many christians are watching movies that have scences that include fornication, witchcraft, and everything else that is contrary to God's Word. Philippians 4:8  sums up what is o.k. for christians to put in their mind:

Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.

Before seeing a movie I also like to go to www.pluggedin.com, a website from Focus on the Family that reviews a movie from a Biblical standpoint.

Some people might label you a legalist for being overly concerned what movies you watch and from choosing to abstain from movies contrary to God's Word, but I call this living a life set apart from the world and choosing to guard our minds.  Our flesh doesn't need to be fed, but put to death.  Most secular movies feed the flesh.  If in doubt over whether or not a movie is proper to watch, we choose not to watch it.  God's Word says whatever is not of faith, is sin.  God is always faithful to lead his children.  As spirit filled christians we should be able to have discernment when it comes to what we are putting in our mind.  For some reason many christians believe witchcraft, murder, and adultery is sin think it's o.k. to watch it on a movie screen as long as they are not commiting the act.
How this must grieve the heart of God- to see people entertaining themselves with the same things that nailed Jesus, His Son on the cross.

We have to also remember that some movies are a matter of conviction and not right from wrong.  We have to be led by the Spirit. Just because we don't agree with a movie, doesn't make it a sin for someone else. There are cartoon movies that I wont let my children watch, but others allow it, and that's o.k. There are also types of music I listen to that other christians diagree with me about.  We have to keep going back to the Word of God.  If it agrees with Philippians 4:8 and you don't feel God's conviction on it, then it's o.k.

One of the most talked about movies recently is Breaking of the Dawn 2 from the Twilight series.  I don't see this movie as a matter of personal conviction, but right and wrong.  After reading the review you will understand what I mean.
 Here is a review of the movie, although I couldn't bring myself to read through the entire review.

I can't tell you how many christians, even spiritual leaders that have watched this movie this week.
It breaks my heart how many christians think it's o.k.
I'm not sure how we as christians are supposed to handle seeing our brothers and sisters backslide.  I usually confront my sister in love, but have been labeled as a trouble maker, a legalist, being critical spirited, spliting up the church.   I know I thank God each day for friends and true sisters in Christ that come to me and tell me the truth about myself.  It doesn't always feel good, but it benefits me in the long run. We as christians need each other.  We are not supposed to turn a blind eye to sin.  Do we love our brother and sister in Christ enough to be honest with them or do we love having the approval of others more? Do we fear God or do we fear man?

Proverbs 27:1
Iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.

James 5:19-20
My brethren, if any among you strays from the truth and one turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.

Proverbs 9:7-9
He who corrects a scoffer gets dishonor for himself;
And he who reproves a wicked man gets insults for himself.
Do not reprove a scoffer lest he hate you;
Reprove a wise man, and he will love you.
Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser,
Teach a righteous man, and he will increase his learning.

We are living in the last days where people call good evil and evil good.  We can't endure to the end without the Holy Spirit living inside of us, staying faithful to God's Word and prayer.  Let's encourage our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ not to have any area of compromise and to be a light to a dark world that needs to see the life of Christ in and through us.

  1. Thank you! This is incredibly encouraging. I find too many times I try to see how far I can go, how much is not forbidden, instead of realizing its about following God in everything. Absolutely everything.
    Thank you very very much for writing this. You are right, if we love people, we have to confront them. I need courage to do this....
